Who Was He? By Hagop and David
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bowdoin college, alongside many of the elite of his day. He published his first work in 1828, and continued writing for most of the rest of his life. His works focused on the dark nature and inherent sin of humanity, although he was allied with the transcendentalist movement. After publicly courting several women, he married Sophia Peabody in 1842, who shared his reclusive tendencies. Hawthorne had 4 children before dying in 1864.
Scarlet letter is known as feminist text-why? Scarlet Letter is known as feminist text due to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s constant alluding to the gender inequalities of puritan society when his female character faces criticism and exclusion after committing adultery. Despite the punishment Hester receives, men at the time wouldn’t receive punishment for such a deed. The themes in The Scarlet Letter include freedom of expression, moral differences between men and women, and even occasional references to Transcendentalist philosophy. by Ibad and Maria

Hawthorne admitted that, "some portions of the book are powerfully written." Readers and reviewers agreed with him in spite of his subject matter, which was considered very risqué in the mid-1800's. Many considered Hawthorne to be the first writer to truly represent American perspective and style in a work of writing.
The book is set in 1600's Puritan Boston. The residents of Puritan Boston were as much as Hawthorne described them; they were hard working and devoted to their way of life.
