DQ: When Tayo is visiting with the doctor at the VA hospital (pp. 15-16), he refers to himself in the 3rd person. What is the reader supposed to infer from this? Is he crazy? Who does he think he is if he's not himself? It's confusing.

DQ: Are you surprised by Tayo’s statement on pg. 18 about the Japanese woman who tries to help him and her son?

DQ: On page 14, Tayo prays that the rain will go away. It is described that the "grass turned yellow and it did nt grow" then it says "Tayo could see the consequences of his praying". How does this foreshadow the events to come? What does the portrayl of "yellow" say here?

DQ: Tayo thinks about the moon and distances on page 19. He says "Distances and days existed in themselves then; they all had a story. They were not barriers" What is the purpose of this statement? How does it show how Tayo is feeling about his current situation?

1. In the poem ceremony, who is this poem defying? What represents this group in the text so far?
- When it says “Their evil is mighty but it can’t stand up to our stories”, who is they? And is it the Laguna Pueblo Indians alone that this poem speaks for?
2. Is green bad and yellow good, or the reverse? Does it switch throughout the story so far as we have read?
- When Josiah says, “Nothing was all good or all bad either; it all depended”, does this reflect in how sometimes the color green is good and sometimes the color yellow is good in Tayo’s eyes?

Throughout the first thirty pages of the text, Leslie Silko explores Tayo’s relationship with rain, even providing a poem on pages 13-14 devoted specifically to that theme. What does rain represent in this section of the book? How does this poem demonstrate Tayo’s relationship with rain?

On page 25, and throughout the first section of the novel, Tayo reflects on moments in his past with Josiah. In many of these flashbacks, Josiah seems to be acting as Tayo’s father figure. What is Tayo’s relation to Josiah? How has the loss of his father figure affected him?

"When you don't fit in, you become superhuman. You can feel everyone else's eyes on you, stuck like Velcro. You can hear a whisper about you from a mile away. You can disappear, even when it looks like you're still standing right there. You can scream, and nobody hears a sound. You become the mutant who fell into the vat of acid, the Joker who can't remove his mask, the bionic man who's missing all his limbs and none of his heart. You are the thing that used to be normal, but that was so long ago, you can't even remember what it was like."

On page 124 of Ceremony, Tayo says, referring to Josiah, “He loved me. He loved me, and I didn’t do anything to save him … He died because there was no one to help him search for the cattle after they were stolen” (Silko 124). Tayo feels guilt for his uncle’s death because he left Josiah to fight in the war when he had promised to stay and help raise the cattle. To what degree is Tayo actually responsible for Josiah’s death?

“Tayo watched him walk down the path from the old man’s place, and he could feel cold sweat between his fingers. His heart was pounding, and all he could think about was that if he started running right then, he could still catch up to Robert” (118). Why is Tayo so afraid of the medicine man?

Ceremony Questions
“When the sergeant told them to kill all the Japanese soldiers lined up with their hands on top of their heads, Tayo could not pull the trigger” (7)
I don’t understand why Americans are painted so barbarically here. What is the significance of American atrocities, rather than valor or kindness, being recounted? Why would Tayo remember these events rather than the common instances of heroism?

“The sound of the rain got louder, pounding on the leaves, splashing in the ruts; it splattered on his head, and the sound echoed in his skull. It streamed down his face and neck like jungle flies with crawling feet” (12)
Why does the rain bother Tayo so much? Does it still haunt him in the way crunching noises do, or has the drought cured his fear of rain?

“The tall soldier pushed Tayo away, not hard, but the way a small child would be pushed away by an older brother…the tall soldier looked at him curiously” (44)
I don’t understand why the Japanese soldier seems so normal. What do these small signs of humanity in the Japanese soldier represent? Why does Tayo refrain from hating the Japanese even after this soldier bludgeons Rocky to death?

“’I’m sick’, he said, turning away from the old man to vomit. ‘I’m sick, but I never killed any enemy’” (36)
What is actually making Tayo sick enough to turn vomit into a motif? How does his sickness represent more than just his own bad memories?

“He loved me. He loved me and I didn’t do anything to save him” (124)
Now that Josiah is dead, does anyone love Tayo? Could his suffering and illness have a cause as simple as lack of love?

“Don’t confuse those who go to the bears with the witch people” (131)
I don’t understand the whole section about witches. How do humans, bears, bear people and witches represent Indians, whites, and their relationship? What else could witches represent?

“The old man came forward then and cut Tayo across the top of his head” (143)
What specific parts of the ceremony seem to help Tayo? Should the stories count as part of the ceremony?

“’Sometimes I have to shake my head’, she’d say, ‘because human beings deserve exactly what they get’” (151)
How does this statement in Betonie’s story apply to the way the Laguna people feel about losing their land? How does it apply to Tayo’s illness?

“After spending all her life at Towac, she didn’t need to be wasting her time there, in the middle of nowhere, someplace worse than the reservation she had left. If she hung around any longer with these guys, that’s how she’d end up. Like the rest of the Indians” (166)

2. On page 150, Betonie tells the story of the Mexican girl saying, ‘“Why do I bother to lay down with you old man?’” What is the relationship between the Descheeny and the Mexican girl?

DQ: Early in the book Tayo experienced some hallucinations (p.7-8), is this the sickness that Harley refers to on page 22, when he said “you were really sick when you got back? Or is it referring to the sickness that Tayo was in the hospital for on page 15-16? Or is it both?

DQ: Harley talks about how his family sent him to the ranch that him and Tayo stay at in order to “keep him away from beer and out of trouble” (p.23-24), but Tayo said explained that he wanted to be alone and that the ranch “is a good place for it”. Does this mean Tayo is staying at the ranch for the same reason why Harley’s family wants him to stay there or is he there for something different?

Quote: “The feeling of not belonging, of not being entirely worthy, of being sometimes hostage to your own sensibilities. Those things speak to me very personally.” -Anthony Minghella

DQ: The end of the story on page 48 reads, “‘I’ve had enough of that,’ she said, ‘If they like that magic so much let them live off of it.’ So she took the plants and grass from them. Being that this is the story of how the drought was caused, does this mean that the war itself caused it, or the people on the reservation caused it, or possibly both?

DQ: On page 125 Betonie says, “This has been going on for a long time. They will try to stop you from completing the ceremony.” If the “they” he refers to is Tayo’s family, then what does this say about the familial relationship that Tayo has with the rest of his family?

DQ: During the Ceremony there comes some lines that say, “Come home, happily return belonging to your home return to long life and happiness again return to long life and happiness” (143). Does this describe the purpose of the Ceremony and why they want Tayo and all the other veterans to do this? And at the end of the Ceremony it reads, “All kinds of evil were still on him” (144). Is this possibly foreshadowing that the Ceremony never completely works or just doesn’t work on Tayo completely?

DQ: Bertonie’s Story. When Bertonie talks about his grandpa and says “They sent Descheeny the patients they couldn’t cure, the victims of this new evil set loose upon the world” (150), what does this have to do with the theme/motif of ceremony (moving forward)?

How are the wild animals connected to the Laguna people? What is the difference between the wild animals and the cattle?

“His anger excluded everything but the horse…he reined the mare in tight and kept his heels tight against her sides to let her know he meant business” (193)
What makes Tayo upset with the horse? What is its symbolic importance?

While Tayo rides in Leroy’s truck with Leroy, Harley, and Helen Jean, he watches the grasshoppers through the window. He spends a lot of time thinking about the grasshoppers, and he even “want[s] to catch a grasshopper and hold it close to his face, to look at its big flat eyes and shiny thin legs with stripes of black and brown like beadwork, making tiny intricate designs” (Silko 156). According to what’s-your-sign.com (http://www.whats-your-sign.com/grasshopper-totem-and-symbolism.html) grasshoppers in Native American culture are symbols of glad tidings, harbingers of good news. However, rather than focusing on the grasshoppers as a positive sign, Tayo dwells on the fact that “the last time he held one, Rocky was with him” (156) and the fact that in “another month the grasshoppers w[ill] be dead” (157). Why are the grasshoppers so important to Tayo at this juncture in his story? Are they a good omen or a bad omen?

“[A]ll he could think about was how the hunter seemed to know that he and the woman had met before” (210). Does the woman’s husband know that she slept with Tayo? If so, why doesn’t he seem to care?

“Leroy was so drunk that when he opened the door for Tayo, the door handle pulled him off the seat and halfway to the ground” (Silko 238). Harley and Leroy have chosen to solve their problems by constantly being drunk. While this seems like a destructive and counterproductive lifestyle, Tayo thinks that it “would be easy to get lost in this place of theirs, where the past, even a few hours before, suddenly los[es] its impact and seem[s] like a vague dream” (241). Is Harley’s and Leroy’s lifestyle and viable solution, or is it, like the hospital for Tayo, a self-destructive escape and a sort of living death?

“It’s almost completed,” she said. “We are coming to the end soon” (233). What is the “it” that Ts’eh refers to here? Is she saying that it is almost time for her to leave Tayo? Is she saying that Tayo’s ceremony is almost over?

Sunrise, sunrise
Looks like mornin' in your eyes
But the clocks held 9:15 for hours
Sunrise, sunrise
Couldn't tempt us if it tried
'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone

And I said hoo...

Surprise, surprise
Couldn't find it in your eyes
But I'm sure it's written all over my face
Surprise, surprise
Never something I could hide
When I see we made it through another day

And I said hoo...
To you

Now good night
Throw its cover down
On me again
Ooh and if I'm right
It's the only way
To bring me back

Hoo...

Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's hand

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
probably

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice

Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Well, I think you're crazy

Mighty Clouds of Joy-B.J. Thomas

Those old bad dreams
been sleeping in your head.
Those old dark clouds
been hanging around your head.
But all your hard times
will vanish in the wind.
When the mighty clouds of joy come rolling in.
Ohhhh, Holy Jesus
Let your love seize us.
Oh, let us find sweet peace within .
Hallelujah !
Happiness begins,
when the mighty clouds of joy come rolling in.
Those old storm clouds
are slowly drifting by.
And those old raindrops
are fading from your eyes.
And oh, Mr. Sun,
gonna shine on us again.
When the mighty clouds of joy come rolling in.
Ohhhh, Holy Jesus.
Let your love seize us.
Oh, let us find sweet peace within.
Hallelujah !
Happiness begins,
When the mighty clouds of joy come rolling in.
Holy Jesus
Won't you let your love seize us
Let us find sweet peace within
Hallelujah!
Happiness begins,
When the mighty clouds of joy come rolling in.

Nobody's Home lyrics

Well, I couldn't tell you
Why she felt that way
She felt it every day

And I couldn't help her
I just watched her make
The same mistakes again

What's wrong, what's wrong now?
Too many, too many problems
Don't know where she belongs
Where she belongs

She wants to go home
But nobody's home
That's where she lies
Broken inside

With no place to go
No place to go
To dry her eyes
Broken inside

Open your eyes
And look outside
Find the reasons why

You've been rejected
And now you can't find
What you've left behind

Be strong, be strong now
Too many, too many problems
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/a/avril-lavigne-lyrics/nobody_s-home-lyrics.html ]
Don't know where she belongs
Where she belongs

She wants to go home
But nobody's home
That's where she lies
Broken inside

With no place to go
No place to go
To dry her eyes
Broken inside

Her feelings she hides
Her dreams she can't find
She's losing her mind
She's falling behind

She can't find her place
She's losing her faith
She's falling from grace
She's all over the place, yeah

She wants to go home
But nobody's home
That's where she lies
Broken inside

With no place to go
No place to go
To dry her eyes
Broken inside

She's lost inside, lost inside
Oh oh
She's lost inside, lost inside
Oh oh, oh

I always gets a ten,
'cause I'm built like that

I go through guys like money
flyin' out the hands
They try to change me
but they realize they can't
And every tomorrow is a day I never plan
If you're gonna be my man understand

I can't be tamed
I can't be tamed
I can't be blamed
I can't, can't, I can't, can't be tamed
I can't be changed
I can't be tamed
I can't be, can't, I can't be tamed

If there was a question about my intentions,
I'll tell ya
I'm not here to sell ya
Or tell you to go to hell
(I'm not a brat like that)
I'm like a puzzle
but all of my pieces are jagged
If you can understand this,
we can make some magic,
I'm wrong like that

I wanna fly,
I wanna drive,
I wanna go
I wanna be a part of something I don't know
And if you try to hold me back I might explode
Baby, by now you should know

I can't be tamed
I can't be tamed
I can't be blamed
I can't, can't, I can't, can't be tamed
I can't be changed
I can't be tamed
I can't be, can't, I can't be tamed

Well I'm not a trick you play,
I'm wired a different way
I'm not a mistake,
I'm not a fake,
It's set in my DNA
Don't change me
Don't change me
Don't change me
Don't change me
(I can't be tamed)

I wanna fly,
I wanna drive,
I wanna go
I wanna be a part of something I don't know
And if you try to hold me back I might explode
Baby, by now you should know

I can't be tamed
I can't be tamed
I can't be blamed
I can't, can't, I can't, can't be tamed
I can't be changed
I can't be tamed
I can't be, can't, I can't be tamed

Shins: A Comet Appears

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVutw8DLuD4

A Comet Appears

One hand on this wily comet,
Take a drink just to give me some weight,
Some uber-man I'd make,
I'm barely a vapor

They shone a chlorine light on,
A host of individual sins,
Let's carve my aging face off,
Fetch us a knife,
Start with my eyes,
Down so the lines,
Form a grimacing smile,

Close your eyes to corral a virtue,
Is this fooling anyone else?
Never worked so long and hard,
To cement a failure,

We can blow on our thumbs and posture,
But the lonely are such delicate things,
The wind from a wasp could blow them,
Into the sea,
With stones on their feet,
Lost to the light and the loving we need,

Still to come,
The worst part and you know it,
There is a numbness,
In your heart and it's growing,

With burnt sage and a forest of bygones,
I click my heels,
Get the devils in line,
A list of things I could lay the blame on,
Might give me a way out,

But with each turn,
It stays front and center,
Like a dart stuck square in your eye,
Every post you can hitch your faith on,
Is a pie in the sky,
Chock full of lies,
A tool we devise,
To make sinking stones fly,

And still to come,
The worst part and you know it,
There is a numbness,
In your heart and it's growing.

The Climb (Miley Cyrus)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG2zyeVRcbs

I can almost see it
That dream I'm dreaming but
There's a voice inside my head sayin,
You'll never reach it,
Every step I'm taking,
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction

Lyrics Provided By ZoneLyrics.net

My faith is shaking but I
Got to keep trying
Got to keep my head held high

There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing,
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down but
No I'm not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm going to remember most yeah
Just got to keep going
And I,
I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on, cause

There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes I'm gonna to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb (yeah)

There's always going to be another mountain
I'm always going to want to make it move
Always going to be an uphill battle,
Sometimes you going to have to lose,
Ain't about how fast I get there,
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb (yeah yeah ea ea)

Keep on moving
Keep climbing
Keep the faith baby
It's all about
It's all about
The climb
Keep the faith
Keep your faith

Whoa a oh oh

The Long and Winding Road
the Beatles

The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to your door.

The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here?
Let me know the way.

Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried,
Anyway you'll never know
The many ways I've tried.

And still they lead me back
To the long, winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago
Don't leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door.

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago (ohhh)
Don't keep me waiting here (don't keep me waiting)
Lead me to your door. (yeah yeah yeah yeah)

Laura Goetz (again)

This song is about a journey that never really ends and how sometimes you are alone, and sometimes you cry. It really represents Tayo's journey because Tayo went on a journey and he had to go through most of it alone.

Furr-Blitzen Trapper

Yeah, when I was only 17,
I could hear the angels whispering
So I droned into the words and wandered aimlessly about
Until I heard my mother shouting through the fog
It turned out to be the howling of a dog
Or a wolf to be exact, the sound sent shivers down my back
But I was drawn into the pack and before long
They allowed me to join in and sing their song
So from the cliffs and highest hill, yeah
We would gladly get our fill
Howling endlessly and shrilly at the dawn
And I lost the taste for judging right from wrong
For my flesh had turned to fur, yeah
And my thoughts, they surely were
Turned to instinct and obedience to God.

You can wear your fur
like a river on fire
But you better be sure
if you're makin' God a liar
I'm a rattlesnake, Babe,
I'm like fuel on fire
So if you're gonna' get made,
Don't be afraid of what you've learned

On the day that I turned 23,
I was curled up underneath a dogwood tree
When suddenly a girl with skin the color of a pearl
She wandered aimlessly, but she didn't seem to see

[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/furr-lyrics-blitzen-trapper.html ]

She was listenin' for the angels just like me
So I stood and looked about
I brushed the leaves off of my snout
And then I heard my mother shouting through the trees
You should have seen that girl go shaky at the knees
So I took her by the arm
We settled down upon a farm
And raised our children up as gently as you please.

And now my fur has turned to skin
And I've been quickly ushered in
To a world that I confess I do not know
But I still dream of running careless through the snow
An' through the howlin' winds that blow,
Across the ancient distant flow,
It fill our bodies up like water till we know.

You can wear your fur
Like a river on fire
But you better be sure
If you're makin' God a liar
I'm a rattlesnake, Babe,
I'm like fuel on fire
So if you're gonna' get made,
Don't be afraid of what you've learned

Crazy

I remember when, I remember
I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space

And when you're out there without care
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly

And I hope that you are
Having the time of your life
But think twice
That's my only advice

Come on now, who do you
Who do you, who do you, who do you think you are?
Ha ha ha, bless your soul
You really think you're in control?

Well, I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart
To lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember
Is thinking, I want to be like them

Ever since I was little
Ever since I was little
It looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

But maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably

Riders in the Sky(A Cowboy Legend)

An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
A'plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns wuz black and shiny and their hot breaths he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, and shirts all soaked with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd but they ain't caught them yet
They've got to ride forever in that range up in the sky
On horses snortin' fire, as they ride on, hear their cry

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell a' ridin' on our range"
"Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride"
"A-tryin' to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies."

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
Ghost riders in the sky

I would turn on the TV but it's so embarrassing
To see all the other people I don't know what they mean
And it was magic at first when they spoke without sound
But now this world is gonna hurt you better turn that thing down
Turn it around

"It wasn't me", says the boy with the gun
"Sure I pulled the trigger but it needed to be done
Cause life's been killing me ever since it begun
You cant blame me cause I'm too young"

"You can't blame me sure the killer was my son
But I didn't teach him to pull the trigger of the gun
It's the killing on this TV screen
You cant blame me its those images he seen"

Well "You can't blame me", says the media man
Well "I wasn't the one who came up with the plan
I just point my camera at what the people want to see
Man it's a two way mirror and you cant blame me"

"You can't blame me", says the singer of the song
Or the maker of the movie which he based his life on
"It's only entertainment and as anyone can see
The smoke machines and makeup and you cant fool me"

It was you it was me it was every man
We've all got the blood on our hands
We only receive what we demand
And if we want hell then hell's what we'll have

And I would turn on the TV
But it's so embarrassing
To see all the other people
I don't even know what they mean
And it was magic at first
But let everyone down
And now this world is gonna hurt
You better turn it around
Turn it around
