Dear Mom and Dad,
I am writing to you from Wake Island, where I’m stationed in the South Pacific to help build the half-completed U.S. air and submarine base. Only a few weeks until Christmas, and I am sad that I won’t be there to celebrate with you. The news about the Pearl Harbor bombing came over the radio this morning and we were all shocked. It is nearly lunchtime here on the base. What do I hear? Airplanes? We weren’t expecting more U.S. forces. Out the window, I see Japanese bombers… 5… 10… 30… there are too many to count. It’s just like Pearl Harbor! Pray for me.
Love from your son

Genetic Influences on Alcohol and Alcoholism:
“Alcoholism, like diabetes or hypertension, is a complex condition influenced by both environment and genes.
“If we can identify those who are genetically vulnerable, we can modify the environment to help them."

Dear Home,
I am looking forward to coming home, although I know things will be very different. I have a feeling I won’t be able to adjust back to a normal lifestyle. Some of the soldiers here have taken up drinking as a way of coping with their trauma, something which I will never do. But I can’t help feeling so depressed. Seeing all these people killed has had such a profound effect on me, and I will never be able to forgive myself.

“…that there is a strong genetic influence on susceptibility to alcoholism. Genetically based individual differences also exist in such areas as drinking behavior, sensitivity and tolerance to alcohol, and alcohol elimination rates” (Kibbey).

They value thinking very highly and have a scholarship program. Traditionally they raised livestock, but a uranium field is located on the reservation so many became miners. Baseball is very important and there are five semi-pro baseball teams.

Children were separated from their families. They were not allowed to speak their native language or practice any of their customs. It was a traumatizing experience.

I know you will never read this, but don’t worry about me. We put up a good fight, and brought down lots of Japs with us. When the time came to give up we knew that it was the end, and now it’s only a matter of time. I have time to get ready to go, and this way is better than getting blasted by a shell or crashing in a plane.

Silence during ceremonies is necessary. Feast days bring tribal members together so that culture, language and religion can be renewed. The 19 Pueblos of New Mexico have three language groups that branch into five different areas.

The Albuquerque Indian School was created in 1881. It was originally held by Presbyterian Home Mission Board, but it was taken over to Office of Indian Affairs in 1886.

Dear Mom and Dad,
I have been in a horrible battle on Iwo Jima, an island near Japan. It was so horrible and bloody, I am not sure if I will ever stop dreaming about the Japanese soldiers and their eyes that pierced mine as I helped destroy them. I am physically fine, but mentally I am not so sure. I miss home.
Lots of love

1. The quest for genes that influence alcohol abuse follows two paths. One goal is to locate genes that predispose a person to alcoholism. The other is to identify genes that help to prevent this from happening.
2. "We have identified two genes that protect against heavy drinking, and these are particularly prevalent among Asians," Li says. "We have shown that Native Americans, who have a high rate of alcoholism, do not have these protective genes. The one that is particularly effective is a mutation of the gene for the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which plays a major role in metabolizing alcohol. The mutation is found very frequently in Chinese and Japanese populations but is less common among other Asian groups, including Koreans, the Malayo-Polynesian group, and others native to the Pacific Rim. "We've also looked at Euro-Americans, Native Americans, and Eskimos, and they don't have that gene mutation," says Li. Thus, incidentally, the study of genetic mutations and alcoholism links native North-American populations to central Asian ancestors, not to those from China and Japan.

Dear family,
Physically, I was one of the few who got away with no scars. But mentally, the Bataan death march has left me with mental images that I will never be able to get rid of. The Japanese left my friends to die on the harsh baked earth of the Philippines. They shot or ran over with trucks those who were too weak to continue. They forced us to walk 60 miles with no food or water with the purpose of transferring the prisoners of war across the island.

Alchoholism:
1. "It appears that the development of alcoholism is not a case of genetics versus the environment; it is one of genetics and the environment,"
2. "An interesting, important feature is that our alcohol-preferring animals are innately less sensitive to the effects of alcohol. They develop tolerance more rapidly to the behavioral impairment produced by alcohol. This seems to be the case in humans as well. So now we are seeing parallels in humans and animals that point to the same kinds of mechanisms, and I think these are very important in our understanding of the condition of alcoholism."

It didn’t take Tayo long to see the accident of time and space: Rocky was the one who was alive, buying Grandma her heater with the round dial on the front; Rocky was there in college game scores in the sports page of the Albuquerque Journal. It was him, Tayo, who had died, but somehow there had been a mistake with the corpses, and somehow his was still unburied. (Silko 28)
Tayo struggles with Rocky’s death. In what ways is he dealing or not dealing with Rocky’s death? How do the relationships he has now affect this?

Dear Mom and Dad,
Soon after we heard of the horrible attacks on Pearl Harbor we saw them on the horizon. More Japanese bombers than I could count came flying in. They continuously attacked our new base, bombing and bombing until 130 of us had died, and countless more were injured. Luckily I am unharmed, but we did end up having to surrender to the Japanese.

Hope to be home soon,
Your son

Alcoholism
A combination of both genetics and environment influence alcoholism
Native Americans do not have genes that protect against alcoholism, as they are decendents from central Asians, and not the East Asians.
